Markmaking Questions

Updated: Nov 10, 2022

Mark making describes the different lines dots marks patterns and textures we create in an artwork.

Mark making can be used to create tone or to be expressive and show emotions.

In this art piece Vincent van Gogh some of the things he has used are: Composition in his landscape layout of the trees, Tone in the trees Sundays and (what I think is) fences. and Pattern around the sun.

Composition: The way in which different elements of an artwork are combined.

Line : A point that moves

Shape: An enclosed space

Space: a feeling of depth or 3 dimension

Tone: Relative lightness or darkness of a colour

Form: Physical nature

Texture: the perceived surface quality/feel

Colour: reflected light on objects.

Pattern: A design of lines, shapes, forms or colours that repeats

An awareness of the formal elements can influence your art piece by a lot, such as, deciding where to place things to make good composition, Using different colours to change the mood and atmosphere, or the tone changing the emotion and entire feel of the art piece.

How can tone effect emotion:

The use of tone can effect the emotion of the piece by if there is really dark tone it can seem more harsh and loud and disruptive but softer lighter images would be more relaxing and happy.
