Eboy Research

I read an article at the following link which taught me about the story of Eboy. https://www.theverge.com/2014/6/17/5803850/pixel-perfect-the-story-of-eboy

Eboy is a graphic design company founded in Germany by 3 men; Sauerteig, Kai Vermehr, and Svend Smital. It started after the cold war ended and the Berlin Wall came down (80s and 90s). One member in particular, from East Berlin, dreamed of life outside the wall, the culture, and the freedom that lay on the other side. The three men came together in Berlin in the 90s and they are known as the “godfathers“ of pixel art. Their design work is recognisable around the world and is done in 8 bit style pixel art. They explore themes of urban buildings and landscapes, people in cities, and modern culture. All in pixel art. The work is inspired by their background and experiences in cold war Germany, and one member, Sven Smital, is quoted to say "When you grow up in a divided city like Berlin was at that time, it’s always in front of you, the fact that you live a restricted life.”

The colour schemes used in their work include bold bright joyful colours, contrasting with greys, pinks, neons, etc. They do their art digitally, using a computer and software. The skills they need are digital artistic skills and IT skills, and knowledge of popular culture and video games. I think these materials are only the method, and the inspiration of the work comes from their lives and experiences and desire for joyful expression.

Their work conveys a happy joyful expression of life in urban areas. When created, the artist was longing for a better life. The work is happy and cheerful and ordered.

The work is made for high profile customers like Coca Cola and MTV and more. Also for the public and artists to enjoy. You can tell the work was made in a modern age because of the types of buildings and technology included in the pictures, plus the clothes of the characters . As mentioned, the work conveys joyful expression instead of political oppression.

I like the work of Eboy because I really enjoy pixel art and I appreciate their organised, neat , and brightly coloured symmetric designs. The work inspires me because it is good quality work. It creates a relaxing mood for me.
