Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain in 1881. His dad (art teacher in School of Fine Arts in Barcelona) taught him to draw and then he studied in various art schools between 1892 and 1897. He is most know for establishing cubism, which is an abstract form of art where pieces are broken up. He also did line drawings. Some themes he explored were poverty, loneliness and despair. He tried to convey humanity of all types including misery and social alienation. Picasso did a series of line drawings called “War and Peace” where He wanted to convey messages about the war that was going on around him. It was for the world to see the atrocities of both the Spanish civil war and in Korea.
The image above is smooth, soft and simple. It conveys feelings of beauty and peace and calmness. This could represent a longing for peace in times of war.
Mood: Picasso could have been trying to convey a message of hope and calmness and peace in this image. My continuous line drawing also conveys a calmness in the expression on the face.
Formal Elements: Picasso uses the formal element of line drawing in this instance.
Thoughts / Feelings /Mood: The following moods can be felt from this piece; joyfulness, life, calmness, tranquility, and peace. His work has a thought provoking message, making you wonder about the woman in the drawing.
Changes: If I could change Picassos work in this drawing I would add some more detail to the portrait as it looks a bit unfinished. I would give her shoulders as well as a neck. Regarding my own line drawing I would give myself a left eyelid as this was left out! To do this drawing I had to learn portrait drawing skills as well as basic photoshop skills such as layers, and the brush tool.
